Hi Everyone,
I’ve started a new set of video tutorials for Beginners Mixed Media. In the next several weeks I will cover several mediums such as Gel, Modelling paste, Texture Paste, and many more. You can also watch a video about the most common tools for mixed media
The first video is all about Gesso and here is some of the information I covered on the video. Feel free to print, bookmark and share this post. Keep it in a handy place as a helpful reference
What is gesso?
Gesso is a primer for art which contains a glue binder, chalk, pigment and other agents that make it perfect for creating a base for any art project wether is acrylic or oil paint, sprays, inks, etc. It is applied smooth but when dried, it creates a porous surface on any substrate.
Brands of Gesso
There are several brands of Gesso that vary in color and consistency. Some of the brands are: Finnabair by Prima Marketing, Golden, Liquitex, Blicks, Demco, DecoArt, Faber Castell, The Crafters Workshop and 13 Arts. There are so many more brands and most of them great. You just have to try and experiment to find the ones you like. My favourite is by Prima Marketing as its the one I’ve used the most.
Consistency and Viscosity
Gesso comes in different consistencies. It varies between regular gesso which has a liquid consistency to heavy and super-heavy gesso. You can also find gesso in aerosol cans for spraying.
Colors of Gesso
Gesso comes in 3 main colors: White, Black and Clear. It is also available in gold and silver. Scroll down to my video to see some of the advantages of applying different colors of gesso.
Tips and Techniques
There are several tips and techniques when using and applying gesso. Some of the most common techniques are shown below in my video such as using gesso for priming, coating, protecting, mixing, coloring and texturizing a substrate or an art project. Most techniques are learned by experimentation and learning how gesso interacts with other art mediums.
How to Use Gesso?
Gesso can be applied in many different ways depending on the project. Viscosity and color determine what each gesso can be used for and what tool to use for each one.
Tools you need for gesso
There are several essential tools you might need for gesso. These are general tools for mixed media as well and can be seen in this video as well.. The most common tools are: brushes, palette knives, stencils, heat tool, craft mat, texturizing brushes, and silicone brushes.
